Woods of secret

On an early Friday morning in late spring. Kate walked to school with her friend Emma. They walked to school. Emma had picked flowers for her mom’s birthday. They were having a good time and walked around in the grass and laughing.

When Kate looked at her phone and said, “Oh no, we are going to be late again” “It’s already 8.30, we only have 15 minutes till school starts and it’s our last year in school”

“What should we do?” Emma asked

“I don’t know,” answered Kate “but we can’t be late again!”

“Let’s take the short cut through the woods” Emma said

“No,” Kate screamed “We have never walked there before” she as she looked into the woods.

The woods were dark, and they did not know what was in there. They had never walked through there before, and Kate was scared they wouldn’t be able to get through. The school lay on the other side of the woods, but she knew that they would be late if they walked around.

“Come on it is going to be fine, we can just walk straight through the woods” Emma said.

“I knew we should have left earlier; we need to get to school” Kate said

Kate thought and she said quietly “Let’s go then”

They started walking, they went of the road and they walked slowly towards the woods. They walked through the tall grass, the small white flowers, it was very pretty in the beginning and then the forest got thicker and thicker.  Kate and Emma talked, and everything was fine.
“we might actually get to school in time” Kate said

“Yeah, I know in like the first time ever” Emma answered

For a while they just walked and talked. It was a nice, sunny morning and everything seemed like it was going to be fine. Kate thought that it was going to be fine, when it started raining. At first it was only a tiny bit, and so they continued walking. Then it started raining more and more and the wind started to pick up. The wind was whistling in the tree branches.

Kate looked at her watch and said, “we only have two minutes, we are never going to get to school in time”, “shouldn’t we be there soon?”

“I don’t know, I think we might be lost” “How are we going to find our way?”

Right then the rain started pouring down even harder, they ran towards where they thought the school was. But it seemed like they ran and ran without getting anywhere. By now the weather had turned into a storm and the trees were swaying and they couldn’t see anything.

“We have to find shelter soon” Emma screamed over the wind, and Kate agreed.

They started running and they could barely see anything, school started a long time ago and they were just trying to find their way out before it was too late. All of a sudden, the wind had picked up even more and they heard creaking like an old man’s bones and the tree behind them fell down.

Emma screamed and jumped away, “that was so close, we could have been squashed!”

Kate was white in the face and she just stared straight ahead and said “I know, let’s go”

They walked in silence for a while, before Emma turned and said “we have to find shelter right now” “maybe there is cave or a house somewhere”

“yea, we will just have to keep looking” Kate answered, her face returning to her natural colour.

They walked for a while, and then suddenly they saw something that looked like a building.

Kate laughed and ran towards yelling “I see a house; we are finally safe Emma”

They ran to the house, it seemed empty. It was an old small house, it seemed worn.

“It’s seems empty, maybe the door is open?” Emma said, “It’s really scary though”

“At least it’s shelter” Kate answered, just as another tree fell.

They tried the door and it opened with some force. It was dark but they felt the wall and found the light. It showed an old house, the furniture was still there and there was still food on the table. And Kate realized that there might still be someone there. She heard footsteps behind her, sneaking up on her. She screamed and turned around slowly, to see Emma stand behind her.

“Do you want to watch a movie?” she said, “I have downloaded some on my phone”

“You scared me half to death” “but yeah sure”

“Okay let’s sit down, I’m sure we are going to find our way out when the rain stops”

They started watching the movie when the door squeaked, Kate froze, but Emma dragged her upstairs and they ran into a room with an old couch and a small window, which shattered, and they heard the wind howling outside and the rain drumming on the roof. Then they heard footsteps downstairs and voices.

She yelled “someone has been here; we need to find them” “they can’t know what we are doing here” and then they heard the sound of furniture getting moved.

Kate’s face had turned white, and they both held their breath. It felt like someone held her throat closed. She heard footsteps walking up the old creaky stairs. They heard a door getting flung open.

Then another.

Suddenly the door was flung open, Emma held her breath, but Kate screamed. She had seen something so terrifying she passed out and woke up with ice cold water in her face.

Two people stood over her, they were laughing, like death looking them in the eyes. She saw Kate in the corner, her hands were tied, and she lay on the floor.

“What should we do?” “We can’t let them leave” The woman said.

“They know too much already” the man said.

They saw a gun hanging over the door and some animals they were grotesque birds that were as small as ants. The man and woman smuggled illegal animals out of the woods.

At night Emma and Kate lay on the floor by the kitchen, Emma “we should try to get away” whispered “Who knows what they are going to do with us?”

“I don’t know” Kate answered, “How are we going to get away?”

“We should run”

“Are you crazy, Emma”

“We can just try to sneak out and hide in the trees, they will never find us in this weather”

“Ok, we can try, but what if they catch us?”

“We just have to try”

“Okay, let’s go right now, it’s quite now”

They sneaked out.

They ran towards the woods, “Yes, we are going to make it” Kate yelled

She heard a shot and Emma fell to the ground. A few seconds later Kate fell towards the ground. The woman saw them running and shot.
